What is an eFoil?

How an electric hydrofoil flies above the water — and what makes it different from a surfboard.

An eFoil (electric hydrofoil) is a board with an electric motor, a hydrofoil wing, and a wireless hand controller. The motor drives a propeller underwater, and as you gain speed the hydrofoil wing generates lift — raising the board above the water surface. You fly above the water, controlling speed with a trigger in your hand.

No waves, no wind, no boat needed. Just you, the board, and open water.

eFoil vs. electric surfboard

An eFoil is not an electric surfboard. A surfboard floats on the water; an eFoil flies above it on the hydrofoil wing. Once you're up on foil, only the mast and wing are in the water — the board is in the air. That's what creates the smooth, near-silent "flying" sensation Lift riders talk about.

The main parts

  • Board — the platform you stand on, sized for your weight and riding style.

  • Propulsion — the mast and direct-drive motor that mount under the board.

  • Front wing — the single biggest factor in how the foil rides (lift, stability, speed).

  • Back wing — the stabilizer that controls pitch and turning feel.

  • Battery — drops into the board and powers the motor.

  • Hand controller — your wireless throttle, held in your off-hand.
