Hand controller problems

Won't turn on, won't connect, or throttle doesn't work — including the Classic reset.

Controller won't turn on

  1. Check the battery. The Classic uses 2 AA batteries — replace them. The Lift and Elite are rechargeable — charge via the magnetic USB-C cable.

  2. Classic reset: remove the batteries and insert them upside down (reverse polarity), press the power button 3–5 times, flip the batteries back, screw the cover on securely, then try again.

  3. Rechargeable controllers: plug in USB-C and wait at least 15 minutes before retrying — a fully dead controller needs a few minutes to show life.

  4. Inspect the trigger. If it feels stuck or loose, the spring/pin may need the Hand Controller Trigger Kit.

Controller won't connect to the board

  1. Use the right controller for your board:

    • Classic — LIFT4 and earlier ONLY (not LIFT5/LIFTX)

    • Lift — ALL Lift eFoils

    • Elite — LIFT5 and LIFTX only

  2. Firmware (LIFT5 / LIFTX). The most common setup issue: an Elite or Lift controller shipped with old firmware won't pair. Update it via the Lift app (see Firmware updates).

  3. Power cycle both devices. Turn the board on first, then the controller.

  4. Distance. Stay within ~30 ft / 10 m of the board.

  5. Antenna check (LIFT3 and earlier). Open the hatch: confirm the antenna cable is secure to the eBox, undamaged, and the compartment is completely dry.

Connected but throttle doesn't work

  1. Watch the display while pulling the trigger. If it shows throttle input but the motor doesn't respond, the issue is the eBox or propulsion, not the controller — see Propulsion not responding.

  2. No change on the display? The trigger mechanism may be damaged — try the Trigger Kit or contact support.

Upgrading from Classic

The Lift Hand Controller is the path — it's the only controller compatible with every Lift eFoil ever made, so it works on your older board and carries forward if you upgrade.
